Our Next Meeting:
Irish Dancing on Tap!

Our audience loves Irish dancing, so we can expect a large and lively crowd when the Donny Golden School of Dancing visits the Garden City Casino at our March meeting!

Like many of us, Donny Golden is the son of Irish born parents who settled in Brooklyn. Unlike most of us, at the age of sixteen, Donny won first place in the North American Irish Dance Championship competition. A lifetime of Irish Dance teaching followed. His students have won all of the prestigious dance awards and have appeared on stage with Irish legends like The Chieftains. Can you hear the tap shoes already? Bring your questions about costumes and hairstyles! We have a lively start to our 2024 season!

Join us on Wednesday, March 13th at the Garden City Casino. The meeting begins at 7:00pm, and is free and open to the public.

HEDGEMASTER ARCHIVES

The Hedgemaster Archives is our link to our heritage. Please browse our rich collection of Irish culture and history to learn some more of our lineage. We have significantly added to our collection, so take a look at the new additions!

The Meaning of Irishness by George E. Ryan

The members of the Irish Cultural Society and the members of the H.W. Wilson Foundation are pleased to announce  the launch of the 2024 Martin J. Kelly Writing Contest.

This year our contest will challenge students to write an essay in which the writer identifies himself/herself through references to indicators or emblems of the writer’s heritage or interests.  A model of such an essay of identity, The Meaning of Irishness by George E. Ryan, can be viewed by clicking here.

Contest entrants will write an essay built upon references to the things which people accumulate from their heritages and interests.  Our model essay has references to the books, music, art and other cultural elements of Mr. Ryan’s Irish heritage.  Entrants will write an entertaining essay which refers also to the indicators of heritage in their homes or to the signs in a room which show a person’s passionate interests.  Indicators of heritage include religious symbols, foods, celebrations, languages and so much more.  Indicators of passionate interests include reading material, special clothing, posters and so much more.  Heritage need not be of another country– America, too, has produced emblems of an American heritage.

All entries must be received by March 17, 2024

We express our appreciation to our sponsor, The H.W. Wilson Foundation
