MONTHLY MEETING

7:30pm

Garden City Casino

Our Next Meeting:
Memories of Rockaway Beach

Eileen Cronin's is a familiar face at our meetings, both in the audience and on our stage. You have seen Eileen as a cast member with Cill Cais Players and you will remember her one-woman show at our February 2014 meeting when she did a dramatic reading of a family narrative. Eileen was the voice of the Long Ireland Show on Hofstra Radio WRHU for many years. Eileen was awarded the Woman of the Year Award in 2011 by the County Cork Association and was given the Ladies AOH Award for her contributions to the study of Irish Culture. Her presentation at this meeting she entitles "Memories of Rockaway Beach."

Eileen will bring the McNulty Family and Micky Carton to our stage. She'll ask us to remember sand and jelly sandwiches and the rule about not swimming for one hour after eating. Perhaps Eileen will remind us of the Angelus recitation on the beach at noon every day to show us how much things have changed. Bring your sun tan lotion!

Join us on Wednesday, December 9th at the Garden City Casino - please note the venue change. The meeting begins at 7:30pm.

Face coverings are required and social distancing is expected to be practiced by those in attendance. Maximum attendance is 40, so arrive early to make sure you get a spot!

2020 Writing Contest Completed

Welcome to the Martin J. Kelly Writing Contest!

This year, our contest challenged students to incorporate Early Modern English phraseology in a contemporary setting, such as rewriting school rules using words like vouch and attainted and referring to the principal as the seneschal.  As an example of Early Modern English vocabulary and usage, we are providing the text of the Statutes of Kilkenny (1367), which were laws imposed upon Ireland by England.

The contemporary rules will come from school rules, sports rules, club or family rules or any set of regulations with which the entrant wishes to play.  Briefly put, we ask students to rewrite today’s regulations in 14th century English.  Easy?  No.  Fun?  Yes!

We express our appreciation to teenagers who took up our challenge and to our sponsor, The H.W. Wilson Foundation.
